In Hong Kong, HSBC performed well, as profit at its 62%-owned unit Hang Seng Bank Ltd. doubled in the first half, driven by a one-time gain from an investment in China and higher loan and fee income. The unit saw profit jump to 18.47 billion Hong Kong dollars (US$2.38 billion), up from HK$9.25 billion a year earlier, as an accounting reclassification now treats a 10.9% stake in Industrial Bank Co. as a financial investment rather than an associate. Excluding that change, Hang Seng Bank said its first-half net profit rose 27%.
